Science is a core part of the curriculum at Ramsey Junior School. Much of the Science
curriculum is taught through topics. If this is not possible, Science is taught each week
as a stand-alone subject. The aim of Science teaching in lower Key Stage 2 is to enable pupils to broaden their scientific view of the world around them. This is achieved through exploring, talking about, testing and developing ideas about everyday phenomena. We focus heavily on learning to read and spell scientific vocabulary. The principal focus of Science teaching in upper Key Stage 2 is to enable pupils to develop a deeper understanding of a wide range of scientific ideas. This is achieved
through pupils asking their own questions about scientific phenomena.
The Science curriculum is further enhanced through visits out of school, visitors working with the children in school and also using our own school grounds. Teachers assess pupil progress in Science informally during each unit that is taught and formal assessments are made at the end of Key Stage 2.
